A Guide to Chasing Sunsets in Costa Rica

After spending a few months living there and frequent return trips, Costa Rica has become my home away from home. One of the reasons I became so enamored with this country is due to its plentiful sunsets. There’s nothing like winding down from an adventurous day than digging your toes in the sand and watching the golden sun fade into the night. Check out my favorite spots below!

Tamarindo Beach, Guanacaste

Tamarindo Beach is located on the Pacific coast, known for its golden sands and fantastic sunsets. Many beachfront restaurants and bars offer the perfect vantage point to enjoy the view while sipping on a happy hour cocktail. We love Tamarindo for the sunset views and the entertainment that comes along with it. Post up for sunset and enjoy live music from El Be Club, sunset fire dancers, and a half-priced marg and watch the sky light up with hues of purple, orange, and yellow.

Jacó Beach, Puntarenas

As one of the most popular beach destinations in Costa Rica, Jacó offers a vibrant beach scene and vibrant sunsets. Head to the western end of the beach for the best views.

Manuel Antonio National Park, Puntarenas

This national park is famous for its lush rainforests and wildlife and its stunning sunsets over the Pacific Ocean. Head to Playa Espadilla or the park’s viewpoint for an unforgettable experience.

Playa Conchal, Guanacaste

Known for its unique crushed shell beach, Playa Conchal offers a beautiful location to witness the sun setting over the Pacific. The beach’s shallow blue waters and gentle waves add to the charm of the experience.

Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, Puntarenas

While this might be a less conventional choice, the cloud forest can provide a mystical atmosphere during sunset. Witness the sun’s rays filtering through the mist and trees for a magical experience.

Santa Teresa Beach, Nicoya Peninsula

This laid-back surf town offers a more tranquil and secluded setting to watch the sunset. You can enjoy the view from the beach itself or one of the nearby oceanfront accommodations.

Arenal Lake, Alajuela

The Arenal Volcano and Arenal Lake create a picturesque setting for watching the sunset. Find a spot along the lake’s shore or take a boat tour to enjoy the view from the water.

Playa Hermosa, Guanacaste

This beautiful and quiet beach is an excellent spot to watch the sun go down in a more serene setting. You can often find several beachfront restaurants and accommodations offering sunset views.

Nosara

Not only is Nosara known for yogis and surfing but combining the two is chef’s kiss. Watch as the surfers all paddle out for sunset and go find a spot on the beach to do a sun salutation and celebrate the sunset. Nosara has some of the most incredible views of the sunset and the vibes and energy that come along with it are just unmatched!
