Hi there, I’m Jason, a Boise native! As a traveler visiting Boise, Idaho for the first time, here are some things you should know to make your trip enjoyable and hassle-free.
Boise is a high desert with hot summers and cold winters. The best time to visit varies based on the activities you plan to engage in.
*Be sure to check the weather forecast before your trip and pack layers!
Boise has a well-connected public transportation system, including buses operated by Valley Regional Transit. Taxis and rideshare services (Uber & Lyft) are also available. But I’d consider renting a car so you have the most flexibility (especially if you plan to explore areas outside the city).
Boise offers a range of attractions for visitors.
Boise is surrounded by natural beauty and outdoor recreational opportunities. Take advantage of outdoor activities like hiking, biking, fishing, and rafting in the Boise Foothills or along the Boise River. Bogus Basin Mountain Recreation Area, located just outside the city, offers skiing and snowboarding in winter and hiking and mountain biking trails in summer.
Boise has a thriving food scene with a mix of cuisines. Don't miss trying some local specialties like finger steaks, Basque cuisine, and Idaho potatoes (with fry sauce). Explore the farmers markets for fresh produce and artisanal products.
Boise has a rich Basque heritage, and you can learn about it at the Basque Block downtown. Visit the Basque Museum and Cultural Center, dine at Basque restaurants, and participate in Basque festivals and events if your visit aligns with them. Fun fact: I’m 20% Basque and had no idea Boise had such a vibrant Basque culture!
Check the local events calendar before your trip as Boise hosts various festivals and events throughout the year. The Treefort Music Fest, Boise River Festival, and Capital City Public Market are some popular ones.
If you have time, consider taking day trips from Boise. Explore the wine country in the Snake River Valley, enjoy lake life in McCall, or marvel at the beauty of Shoshone Falls near Twin Falls.
Boise is generally considered a safe city, I have never felt unsafe. But it's always wise to take typical precautions and be aware of your surroundings.
Idahoans are known for their friendliness and politeness. It's customary to greet people with a smile and a "hello" or "good morning." Respect the outdoors and be mindful of the natural environment when exploring.
