The history of Marrakesh extends back nearly a thousand years, with old and new traditions coming together to create magic. Although you could spend your entire trip exploring the fantastic labyrinthine streets, bustling souks, and ancient medina, you could also dabble in Marrakesh’s amazing creative scene, visit the delicately manicured gardens, or take some you-time at one of Marrakesh’s many luxury spas. Marrakesh is a vibrant city bursting with striking colors, impressive architecture, and incredible food, whether it’s local street food or 5-star dishes. If you’re planning a trip to Marrakesh, here are a few of the best restaurants that you can’t miss.
The medina is Marrakesh's old city, which has since been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. Inside the medina, the sprawling souk offers all the food you could imagine, from fresh fruits and vegetables to exotic spices and teas to local herbs and oils. You can easily get lost in the souk and try your array of street food, but there are also a bunch of great restaurants in the medina to stop by.
L’mida is tucked away in a narrow alley with views of the Atlas mountains. It offers modern Moroccan fusion, using fresh and local ingredients that change with the seasons. Modern meets traditional in both style and food at L’mida. Make sure you head up to the rooftop bar for sunset!
Nomad is another great spot right in the middle of the medina. It has four floors, but the rooftop terrace might be the best one. Head upstairs and take a pause from the hustle and bustle as you look over the medina and mountains. Nomad takes local, traditional cuisine and international dishes and adds a modern Moroccan twist. Nomad is a perfect spot for lunch or dinner before setting back out into the swirling streets.
Neighboring the ancient medina is Gueliz, a modern district with upscale restaurants and bars as well as chic art galleries and shops. It’s a great spot to go if you need to take a breath from the buzzing medina.
While in Gueliz, a visit to Plus61 is a must. This Australian restaurant is all about fresh ingredients and simplicity, all the while combining the brilliant flavors of the Mediterranean, Middle East, and South Asia.“We let the ingredients speak for themselves,” they write. We agree.
Another amazing spot is Al Fassia. Al Fassia is the spot to go to for authentic Moroccan food, like home-cooked tagines or couscous dishes. Even better, it’s run entirely by women and was the first female-led restaurant in Marrakesh. Girl power! You can sit outside in their beautiful gardens or opt to stay inside, sitting in one of their many classic Moroccan lounges.
So if you're thinking about planning a trip to Marrakech, do it. With such rich history, an abundance of adventures, and out-of-this-world food, this will be a trip of a lifetime.
