Are you a traveling dog mom who brings her “child” everywhere? Same. I’m Kelsey, local Austin Insider and fellow dog mom known for sharing the best recs for you and your k9 kiddo on @UrbanBirdDogs. Ruby and I have mapped out your next weekend getaway to this beautiful Southern city, we call home: Austin, Texas.
Dog moms, get excited for our favorite boutique hotel in Austin that loves dogs as much as you do! Hotel Ella is no stranger to southern hospitality with a cabana-lined pool, wrap-around veranda, 24/7 concierge service, a cute Parlor Bar, and the one and only, Ella’s Coffee Bar, which is the addition to Hotel Ella you didn’t know you needed. Why? Ella’s Coffee Bar is now serving Dõ Bakery goods from 7am - 2pm each day. If you’re wanting more Dõ, make sure to check out our section on Camp East below.
Head over to Meanwhile Brewing with your dog, and stay awhile. This dog-friendly mecca is the perfect place to chill on a beautiful day, or smoosh inside when the Austin weather system decides to do something crazy.
Meanwhile has a long list of brews on tap, but they’ve been hitting a home run with their sours lately. So my personal recommendation: give whatever their latest sour beer on tap is a whirl.
After you’ve grabbed your beer, stop over at the Bésame food truck, and grab a Tres Besitos ice cream sampler. Trust me, three scoops won’t seem like enough if there are still more flavors to try that week. This family-run Austin food truck makes the best homemade ice cream we’ve ever tasted. Bésame makes it fresh every morning, and changes up their flavors regularly. I always find a dog-friendly flavor for Ruby, and get her a pup cup because she deserves a cheat day every now and again, too!
Camp East is a vibe, and I’m all about it! It’s the new East Austin hot-spot featuring Cork & Screw, dõ's Tiny Bread Shed, and Fil n Viet. If you’re a planner like I am, I highly recommend pre-ordering any of the incredible SOURdõ baked treats from dõ's Tiny Bread Shed for the Saturday pickup as the stock of baked goods sell out quickly.
So what’s the most efficient way to try everything, while still maximizing your relaxation time? First order the Sinigang Chicken Wings from Fil n Viet. While your wings cook, head over to Cork & Screw where you’ll be bombarded with too many wines to choose from. Take a deep breath, and actually ask for a recommendation because these sommeliers are so good at what they do. We haven’t had a bad bottle yet.
Once you have your perfect bottle of vino, it’ll be time for you to pick up your wings. Afterwards, hop on over to the Tiny Bread Shed for a sweet cinnamon bun. Don’t be surprised if she’s low in supply; her baked goods are a hot commodity around Austin. If I could spend every day at Camp East I would.
