Kaua'i, Hawaii - what literal dreams are made of, am I right? It was a no brainer for my husband and I as we were thinking through postponed Honeymoon spots (covid bride here). Throughout the planning process I used Well Traveled to find the best place to eat, sleep, and play, but I want to share one of the most magical moments we had during our time in Kauai. If you are looking for a truly unique experience while you are in Kaua'i - this is it!
Ok, real talk. Honeymoons are for romance, bubbles, relaxation, and pampering yourself. What more could you ask for? The answer is doggos! The Field Trips through the KHS allow you to take a shelter dog for the day to explore the island with you. Enjoy the natural beauty of the Garden Island, get your “dog fix,” and give a shelter dog a break from the kennels all at the same time!
We scheduled our pick up online prior to arriving in Hawaii. We identified a day we had mostly free and planned to hike and go to the beach. It was an easy drive to KHS (located semi close to the airport). Once you arrive, they introduce you to your sweet pup. Our pup’s name was Connery; he was an absolute stud and had the sweetest smile. They provide us with a leash, a day backpack (includes water, treats, and other goodies you might need), and let us take off on our adventure.
You can choose from the following approved places that the KHS has determined dog-friendly and safe for the hike or walk. They will ask you in advance where you are going and what you plan to do so they can pair you properly. Connery was quite the adventurer, and he was a trooper on our hike. He had plenty of energy to do the entire hike with us, all while saying hi to all that we encountered.
We chose to take Connery to Poipu Beach so he could get the beach experience and also have plenty of time to take him on a long hike. He met no strangers, took many breaks to roll around in the grass, and even splashed around in the ocean. After our hike, we found a dog-friendly restaurant nearby, and he joined us for happy hour and some sunbathing where he made even more friends.
At the end of the day we took him back to his hopefully-not-forever-home at the shelter, but we then worked with KHS to provide all of the content from our adventure to use for marketing purposes to get him adopted!
I cannot express how much fun this was and how it warmed our hearts to see him having such a great day. I would highly recommend this experience to anyone in Kaua'i. The KHS makes it SO easy… and it’s free!
Click here to schedule a pickup time, let the staff match you with an appropriate field trip buddy, and then off you go! A non-refundable donation of $40 is requested to help defer the cost of running the field trip program and making sure all the amazing Kaua’i dogs have everything they need while waiting for their forever homes.
