Puerto Rico is the perfect island getaway, but beyond the beach lies so much more. There’s food, art, culture, a vibrant city, and a whole lot of rum. So when you’re ready to take a break from sunbathing or swimming in the turquoise island waters, here’s where we recommend exploring beyond the beach to truly experience everything the “Island of Enchantment” has to offer.
Ready to savor, sip, explore, and see sunset all on one tour? Then a Spoon small-group tour is for you. Spoon’s authentic Sunset Walk & Taste walks you through the gastronomy, history, and architecture of Old San Juan, featuring Puerto Rican cuisine from family-owned restaurants. In addition to the delicious bites you’ll sample, you’ll also get a glimpse of iconic sites around the city, and be perfectly set up to explore San Juan’s bustling nightlife after the tour.
Did you know that El Yunque National Rainforest is the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System? Home to 240 tree species, stunning waterfalls, along with plenty of lizards, tree frogs, and other island wildlife, an easy hike or two is a must here. Or, if you’re feeling daring, zipline tours are also offered through various tour companies.
Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico is one of the island’s most important cultural destinations, and one of the largest art collections in the Caribbean. Take a spin through the 24 different galleries and admire the many works of local artists throughout the centuries. And when you’re done with your inside tour, you can head to the museum’s outdoor sculpture garden.
There’s a ton of rum to be found in the Caribbean, but one of the most well-known brands is none other than BACARDI: The World’s Most Awarded Rum. The brand’s main distillery is based in Puerto Rico and offers a variety of tours, from a fancy Founder’s Experience tour to mixology classes and casual rum tastings. Most options include some type of tasting, a brief history of the brand, and a trip to the on-site museum.
Okay, so maybe this one is still technically on the beach, but it’s not your average beach activity. Tropical Trail Rides offers two-hour horseback beach tours at 9:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. everyday. Suited for both beginners and experienced riders, the tour is a perfect way to take in beautiful sights of the sea and shore, and even leaves a little room for a short, scenic hike at the end.
