I've always been a city girl at heart but I've spent the last few years back home in the 'burbs and I was craving a change of scenery. Mexico City has been on my travel bucket list for years, so last winter I decided to finally pull the trigger. The trip of my dreams did not disappoint!
Mexico City, known as CDMX, is the most populous city in North America and is filled with so much art, culture, and history, not to mention that it is home to a booming and world-class food scene.
If you can, make reservations well in advance because many places book up fast. Your credit card will be fine at most places, but be sure to keep some pesos on you if you are going to local street vendors (and I highly recommend getting street food for at least one meal).
This restaurant has been on my mind since I heard about it in 2018. Founded by Chefs (and couple) Norma Listman and Saqib Keval, they seamlessly blend the flavors of South Asia, East Africa, and Mexico together with a great selection of natural wine. This place hit all the right notes with its unparalleled flavors, amazing service, and inviting ambiance.
If you're type A, you will either love this or hate this place. Not because of the food, which is farm-to-fork and delicious, but because there is no set menu available. Every morning, the chefs go to the market and pick out the freshest and locally sourced ingredients to use later that night. They will ask you for any dietary restrictions and/or food preferences and then surprise and delight you with multiple dishes until you are full to burst.
My friends and I stumbled upon this restaurant while walking around Polanco and we were lucky enough to snag a dinner reservation that night! This restaurant serves up vegetables with Oaxacan flair in an elegant candlelight space.
Street food tends to be very meat-heavy but this is where I finally found my antidote. Never let being vegetarian or vegan stop you from missing out on street food! Their vegan "al pastor" tacos are a must-have. While I've never had the real deal so I can't make comparisons to the pork version, these were the best vegan/vegetarian tacos I've ever had.
Since I am part of the Well Traveled booking team, I had to stop by and ahem...inspect...the best hotels in the city. Both of these spots are in a prime location, are beloved by the Well Traveled community, and offer our members some exclusive perks when they book.
This hotel wins best check-in hands down. When you arrive here, you are greeted with a warm cup of Mexican hot chocolate. The interiors are a mix of French and Mexican design styles that bring a sophisticated atmosphere. The hotel also has Cityzen: The tallest rooftop bar in the city with unparalleled views of Paseo de la Reforma. Come here during the sunset for prime views.
You can never go wrong with a Four Seasons hotel. It has all the hallmarks of a luxurious name-brand hotel: an unparalleled combination of quality, location, and impeccable service. Its best feature (among many highlights) is its central courtyard. Uncommon amongst hotels in Mexico City, it is a lush and breathtaking oasis nestled right in the heart of the bustling city.
This estate and its beautiful jacaranda tree brought renowned architect Luis Barragán out of retirement to design this beautiful house. Now an art museum open to the public, visiting in spring is when it will be at its best with the house and its gardens surrounded by the purple-blue jacaranda blossoms.
A must-see spot for all photography, design, or architecture lovers. A modernist pink house in what was once a petrified lava field, and is still lived in (tours are by reservation only).
Maybe you've heard Xochimilco described as the 'Venice of Mexico' or a total tourist trap but either description really wouldn't be doing it justice. This is the best day trip with the whole squad: bring your own food and booze or buy them from local vendors among the floating gardens and drift down the canal soaking up the good music from the mariachi bands, the scenery, and all the good vibes.
This view was well worth my 4:30 am wake-up call. The hot air balloons give you breathtaking 360-degree views of the Sun and Moon pyramids during sunrise in this ancient Mesoamerican city. You'll be up early to make the hour-long trip but you won't regret it because there's nothing else like it.
