Well known by European travelers and holidaymakers, the three islands of Malta located in the Mediterranean Sea, south of Italy have been largely untouched by American travelers. Consisting of three main islands: Malta, Gozo, and Comino, human habitation in Malta dates back to around 5900 BCE. With its mix of historic ruins from different empires and its unparallel natural beauty, Malta has served as a filming location for various movies and TV shows, including "Game of Thrones," "Troy," "Captain Phillips," and "Gladiator."
Explore the ancient city near the Grand Harbor. Just south of the Grand Harbor are the winding alleys of Birgu. Home to locals, churches, monuments, boutiques, and some friendly stray cats, Birgu is great for people-watching, photography, and immersing yourself in the Maltese culture.
After wandering around the ancient ruins of the old city, have a gourmet Japanese-inspired lunch overlooking the Grand Harbor. The renowned restaurant AKI shows off just how fresh and delicious Maltese seafood can be and the views over the ruins, monuments, and bay are breathtaking.
Rejuvenate after lunch with an afternoon spa experience near St. Julian. Pick from a Turkish spa treatment or Ayurvedic, Hawai'ian Lomi Lomi, Japanese, Balinese, or Thai massage options. If you had jetlag earlier in the day, you will feel like a whole new person after some spa time.
Now that you're feeling replenished, it's time to get ready to go out for the night. Near St. Julians, is Paceville, an area known for its nightlife and international cuisine offerings. The clubs go until the early hours and have DJs coming in from all over the world. If the clubs and Irish pubs on St George's Road aren't quite your scene, head to the amazing restaurants on the other side of St. Julian for a more low-key dinner and drinks.
Head north to the sleepy village in St. Paul's Bay for a look at the fisherman's life. The brightly painted boats make for great photos and there are plenty of riverside cafes and a famous open market for buying coffee and breakfast. A quick stroll through the village is a great easy morning activity.
After a trip to St. Paul's, it's time to vibe. Book your sun beds ahead of time at Cafe Del Mar and enjoy the all-day pool party that looks out to the bay. When you've gotten your fill of the sun, their restaurant offers fresh local food, craft cocktails, and amazing views.
Take the ferry up to the island of Gozo (and don't forget to grab a pastizzi on the boat for breakfast.) While Gozo is mostly uninhabited, there are plenty of activities to be done no matter what you enjoy doing. If you're feeling outdoorsy, hiking up the cliffsides or some ocean kayaking will be right up your alley. Others can enjoy the beach and the many waterfront restaurants or head to the archeological site of it-Tempji tal-Ä gantija, two neolithic limestone temples, closer to the center of the island.
After you've spent time at Gozo and you're probably exhausted, take the ferry back to the main island for a sunset-timed dinner at the hottest restaurant in Malta that will rejuvenate you completely. Expect the spectacular here from the view overlooking the hills surrounding Mellieha Bay, the impeccable service, and delicious, handmade pasta. The perfect nightcap for a busy day.
