Between the hills, the beach, and the scenery, Los Angeles is the perfect city for some rooftop views and drinks. Luckily for us, there are great rooftops spread out across the city for dinner, a quick happy hour, and the best sunset views out there. Here's my list of the must-go rooftops in Los Angeles.
Located 15 stories up in downtown LA, Perch offers up amazing 360-degree views of the skyline and LA's skyscrapers, Parisian-inspired cuisine and craft cocktails, and the occasional live jazz band to set the mood.
A beachside rooftop that looks out over the ocean and Venice Beach and the bar menu comes with sunscreen so you can really soak up the sun. The sunset views are of course spectacular and DJs come to spin during the night but this bar also offers up a tasty weekend brunch that is worth checking out.
This may not the tallest rooftop in LA, but it makes up for it with great views of the hills, its size, and a lot of local character. The L.P. rooftop bar is one of the largest rooftops in LA with impeccable vibes. It offers shared plates, tacos, and an amazing view of Hollywood Hills and the Sunset Strip. They also host cultural events like movie screenings occasionally so check their Instagram to stay on top of their schedule.
Right on the Malibu pier, which is actually a California state park, this is the rooftop bar that is the best for nature lovers. Thanks to its proximity to the water, it is a great spot for dolphin-watching, surfer spying, and sunset sipping (or perhaps all three.) The restaurant serves healthy and organic farm-to-table fare, specialty cocktails, and fresh juices.
Overlooking the... wait for it... Strand (AKA the 22-mile bike path that goes along the sand and connects all of the best LA county beaches.) This Manhattan beach spot is sophisticated, cozy, and warm with a well-curated wine program and a menu that emphasizes local produce.
Calabra is on top of the Santa Monica Proper Hotel and just a few blocks from the ocean, giving the palm frond and rattan-decorated rooftop a super breezy and sunny feel. The menu is Californian-Mediterranean fusion, the designs are chic, and the views either of the ocean or just to the pool slash sun deck are fantastic.
Overlooking the Marina del Rey harbor, enjoy fresh, handmade pasta while you watch boats head out to Santa Monica Bay. Plus a rare bonus in LA: Easy, free parking! They don't take reservations so be prepared to wait with locals and tourists alike.
This cool and quirky hotel bar has 360-degree views of LA including possibly the best place to see the Hollywood sign (if you'd rather sip on a cocktail than hike all the way up to it.) Live music and DJ nights happen frequently which makes it good for both chill afternoons and going out nights.
This hotel, once the famous Shangri-La hotel, has the only indoor/outdoor rooftop bar in Santa Monica. The best place to go out after an all-day beach hang that offers a relaxed atmosphere, classic small bites like sliders and Brussels sprouts, a straightforward cocktail menu, and tranquil views of the ocean at sunset.
A beer drinker's idea of heaven. This two-floor restaurant overlooks the ocean on the Marine Drive harbor and serves up beloved Ballast Point brews, ciders, and batched hard seltzers. Grab a Sculpin (their Grapefruit IPA,) head to one of their outdoor patios with a fire pit, and enjoy!
