It's no secret: We freaking love food here at Well Traveled. So in addition to educating ourselves via books, movies, podcasts, and more in honor of Black History Month, we thought we'd spotlight some of our favorite black owned restaurants across the country for our members to visit.
So without further adieu, here are 22 delicious spots for you to support this month, or any month.
Dining at Communion? Must be blessed. This neighborhood restaurant is a fave among locals because the cuisine is a mix of traditions, cultures and flavors, just like the tight-knit community that frequents this restaurant.
Our two cents? This place is bomb. It might be unassuming on the outside, but once you’re inside, you’ll be joined by LA locals looking to escape the crowds. We love this casual spot for its down-to-earth vibes, rich and savory soul food and welcoming staff.
The kinda place that makes you feel good. Post & Beam is a great choice when it comes to brunch or dinner and is totally beloved by its community. Chicken and waffles are delish for breakfast or brunch and you should probably get the crab cakes at dinner.
Let us be the first to tell you that Bloom and Plume, a community-oriented coffee shop, is definitely a place you need to check out. First, the floral-themed coffee cups are s’cute (hello instagram story pics) and second, the pretty spot in Echo Park is perfect for a morning pick-me-up before exploring the East side.
First of all, the patio at Alta is undeniably adorable. Second of all, the West African cuisine with a California twist will have. you. drooling. Special care goes into every detail and we love that the plates are meant to be shared. You’ll want to try the braised oxtails, candied yams with spiced pecans and black-eyed pea fritters. Oh, and the mac and cheese looks bomb.
The owners of Lou, The French on the Block are bringing Paris to Los Angeles one croissant at a time. Treat yourself (and your friends) to the delectable selection of cakes, pastries, coffees and sandwiches.
Golden fried chicken drizzled with locally sourced honey and a handrolled buttermilk biscuit on the side is what made Honey’s Kettle Fried Chicken an instant success in LA. The food comes from over ten generations of cooking methods and recipes and you can taste the timeless goodness in every bite.
New York might have the leg up on pizza compared to LA, but they don’t have Brandoni Pepperoni. Chef Brandon Gray calls himself “the Los Angeles Wizard of ‘Za” and he flexes his pizza tossing muscle with California-themed concoctions that are so tasty, you can’t help but have another slice.
It’s a bad day to be a Midtown Creamery ice cream cone on a hot afternoon in Miami. Take your choice of unique flavors that are then piled high on cones dipped in toppings like Fruity Pebbles.
Taking notes from its creative neighborhood Overtown, Red Rooster’s offers an eclectic design and American cuisine with a twist. Part of Red Rooster’s mission (other than serving delicious food), is highlighting local artists, from painters to musicians, so expect your Florida-style shrimp and grits to be paired with some kind of live show.
You’re on vacation, so go for the mac and cheese. There’s a whole page of different variations of the creamy, cheesy, crunchy deliciousness, including BBQ mac and cheese and pizza mac and cheese. If that’s not your thing, the chef (who used to work for Pitbull, dale!) also whips up pizzas, salmon and salads.
If you were out in South Beach all night or just want to get the day started off on the right foot, stop by The Squeeze for your healthy breakfast fix. There’s tons of juices, smoothies and wellness shots for your morning pick-me-up and if you need more, there’s acai bowls and coffee, too.
Locally sourced ingredients, organic and “farm to fork'' probably isn’t what comes to mind when you think of fast food, but Grown is just that. The restaurant describes its food as “cooked slow for fast people” and offers everything from power bowls to healthy omelets. P.S. Anything on the menu can be cooked vegan or vegetarian upon request.
If you don’t mind a loud atmosphere (think music, lots of people, etc.), the varied menu and good drinks at Bureau Bar & Restaurant make it a great option when you can’t decide what you want to eat.
There’s no pizazz at the Red Rooster in Harlem, but that’s OK because there’s nothing to take away from the most delectable comfort food there ever was. Thanks to the talents of chef Marcus Samuelsoon, the Red Rooster has cemented itself as a landmark of Harlem that celebrates the diversity of the neighborhood through cuisine.
It should be illegal to visit Austin and not have some form of BBQ at SLAB. If you go for lunch, check out the sandwiches piled high with slow-cooked meat and tons of toppings. For dinner, there’s pork ribs and BBQ nachos you should definitely try.
Bird Bird Biscuit is kinda like it sounds, the menu features types of chicken, sandwiched between two delicious biscuits. The founders of the restaurant spent two years on the menu, so basically expect perfection in every bite. BTW, if you’re vegetarian, there’s an impossible chicken sandwich with your name on it.
Fried chicken is like so hot right now. Get your fix of chicken and waffles or tasty chicken tenders at The Rolling Rooster. There’s different variations of waffles (try the red velvet one) and you can pick your sides to go with your chicken, like mac and cheese or collard greens.
This spot claims to have the best pancakes ever. And with options like Blueberry Maze, a sweet concoction of white chocolate chips topped with blueberry syrup and fresh blueberries, or the Bacon Boy with chopped bacon, three different types of syrup and peanut butter, nutella and bananas, the rumors might be true.
Part coffee shop, part bookstore, Baldwin & Co. Books is a must-see for all you book and coffee lovers out there. We recommend ordering a coffee (the If Beale Street Could Talk coffee is a fave), then browsing their varied and extensive collection of books.
There’s good BBQ and then there’s GOOD BBQ. Rodney Scott’s BBQ falls into the latter category. You’ll find everything you could ever want out of a BBQ place here, from tender brisket to creamy mac and cheese and savory collard greens.
